I bought a rug for the back room off ebay and had to go down to Brighton to pick it up. Mum and Dad's is on the way, so I asked Mum if she wanted to come for a drive - always nice to have a look at how the other half live. :-)

So we find the address and I was debating whether to back into the driveway because I figured it would be heavy. Mum looked at me as though I was nuts (OK, I am, but I wasn't sure exactly why this time)
"How big is it?"
"Pretty big. That's why I put the seats down. Hope it fits in the back."
Even more alarmed expression
"How big can it be?"
Patiently. "Pretty big, it's for the back room."
Totally stunned expression.
Me again "What? Back room, the floor, you know?"
Mum starts giggling.
"I thought we were picking up a horse rug!"

Last night someone was telling me he'd had a REALLY bad day. He wouldn't say why.
So I was thinking about the last few weeks, and I'd count some pretty bad days too. But I think my criteria for a bad day has changed - death and serious illness you can't have any control over. Anything else you can change, move on, or get over.
Mind you, change and moving on took me seven years.

You know that you are not keeping up with things when you receive a digest email from a listserv with 500 messages in it - the 'digest' version broke last June and they've just fixed it. I had kind of noticed that I wasn't getting them, but thought I must have unsubscribed.

Even more disturbing is that while I wasn't looking Robin McKinley published two books. TWO!!!! How did that happen?

I have occasionally tried to explain to people, especially on internet forums, that karma does not work the way they seem to think it does. After yesterday I'm beginning to think might have to change my mind on that. :-)
Life is very funny.

Friends coming over this afternoon, back of the house is currently full of teenage boys, long sleep in and egg and bacon for breakfast. I love long weekends. I started sorting books last night, and went to bed at 1 with them strewn all over the lounge room. Need to pick them up before people arrive.

One cat is sliding around the timber floors chasing pieces of cardboard. He assures me he has saved me from several. They are all dead. Except THAT one, but he's watching it for me.

More than five

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God . He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets.
Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness, except you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. (Thank you friends!)
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of whom God
is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative--dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift

Regina Brett The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio

*Sigh*

I have a new car. It's new for me anyway. :-)
It does not have scratches. It's clean. The radio works. It's cute and it's red, and I am a little bit pleased with it. Driving it makes me smile.

So this morning I'm stopped at the lights when a car going down the right turn lane clips the back of me. And keeps going. Through the green arrow...gone.

I nip into the right lane, wait through the light changes and follow. In time to see the her turn down a side street in the distance. Pull up next to her, she backs up quick and takes off again. I pursue.

Stop at the next set of lights searching madly for a pen to write down her rego...never mind I'll remember it. So I got out, walked to the front of her car, looked at the damage, walked back and spoke to her - told her I was a little unhappy at her driving away, asked her name "Jessie" and told her she needed to pull over properly to exchange details. Tears trickling down her face, she nods. I walk back to my car, she pulls out into the right hand lane and disappears, by the time I wait through that set of lights she's gone for good.

And all I can remember is half the rego. :-(

It's no big deal, bumper bar will need a respray that I can ill afford. No-one hurt. Not the end of the world...but who does that? I can't believe she did that.

So she was asking questions and searching the net as we talked.

"What nationality was he?"
"Brazillian, I think"
"They have CARS in Brazil?"

I looked at her.
Defensively "I mean Formula One!"

We both dissolved into giggles. "Yes H, all those people in Brazil. Horses and carts. Bicycles."
More giggling.
A pause
She said "You are NOT going to post that in LJ!"

*waves to H*

MRIs are loud. Very. The technician tells me that at least two people a day freak out. Not so bad when it's your legs in the machine and your head sticking out - it would be bloody awful the other way around.
